How it works

Mauna

means mountain.

Wai

means water.

Spring water has come a long way, through sand, gravel and rock. Tap water has not. We give it that path back, right under your sink.

A mother fills the kettle at the tap in a bright kitchen while her daughter drinks a glass of water

Your everyday life with it

Everything as usual. Only the water is different.

  • Coffee and tea. Fresh and without any taste of chlorine, straight into the kettle.
  • The water bottle for school. Filled at the tap in a few seconds.
  • Cooking. Pasta water, soup, vegetables: you use the same tap you always use.
  • No more crates. No carrying, no empties, less plastic waste.
„For 5 years now, our home has been unthinkable without the MAUNAWAI water filter. We love this fresh water quality.“

How it works

How does rain become spring water?

The mountain filters. Rain seeps through the earth and emerges below as clear spring water. Two things happen along the way. These are exactly the two things PiTec does.

In nature

Sand and gravel Rock Spring

In the PiTec under your sink

Tap water to the tap Intensive filter 21 mineral ceramics

Step 1

out

Sand and gravel hold back what does not belong in the water.

The intensive filter holds back microplastics, PFAS and chlorine.

Step 2

in

The rock gives the water its minerals.

PI technology with 21 mineral ceramics keeps minerals and trace elements in and gives the water its spring water structure.

Result

Spring water emerges at the foot of the mountain.

Spring water quality comes from your usual tap.

Turn on the tap.

The research comes from Japan. The cartridge comes from our own development.

How does the planet do it?

It all began with a question from Japanese basic research: How does nature regenerate water, and what gives a mountain spring its quality? Prof. Shoi Yamashita and Dr. Shinji Makino spent over 20 years researching the answer. This gave rise to PI technology.

In 1996, Maria Knoch, founder of MAUNAWAI, brought the first PI water system to Germany. Since then, we have continued to develop the technology, right up to the cartridge in your PiTec.

The most common question

Will it fit under my sink?

Almost always. The PiTec 2in1 is narrower than a shoebox and also fits next to the trap.

  1. 1 Close the angle valve. The small valve under the sink.
  2. 2 Connect. From the valve into the filter, from the filter to the tap.
  3. 3 Position. Standing or on the wall.
  4. 4 Flush through. Done.

The easiest way is to have your plumber do it. In Germany and Austria, our installation partner can come to you on request.

For hard water

Simply add limescale protection.

If you wish, you can extend the PiTec 2in1 with a limescale protection module. It is the same module as in the PiTec Professional: it removes some of the calcium and magnesium from the water and binds the rest so that it no longer forms deposits. No salt, no salt tablets, no electricity.

Evidence

What the laboratory measures.

PFAS, the so-called forever chemicals

Tougher than everyday life. The laboratory contaminated water with ten PFAS substances, totalling around 8.6 micrograms per litre. Far more than is usual in tap water.

Then filtered and measured. Each of the ten substances was determined individually.

Result: None of them could be detected any more. That is over 99.9% less.

To be honest

What no laboratory measures.

How water tastes, and whether it comes close to the water of a good spring, is not found in any test report. That is our experience from 30 years, not a measured value.

Five questions you can ask any supplier

What to look for in an under-sink filter.

What stays in the water?

Do not just ask what comes out, but also what stays in.

With us Minerals and trace elements stay in, thanks to 21 mineral ceramics in the same cartridge.

Are there test values, with laboratory and conditions?

A good value names the laboratory, the date and how it was tested.

With us PFAS: over 99.9% less of the ten substances tested, DAkkS-accredited laboratory. The conditions are listed above under Evidence. Many further analyses are available from our customer service on request.

Do you need a second tap?

That often means a hole in the worktop.

With us No. Your tap stays as it is.

What does it cost over five years?

Device plus cartridges, not just the purchase price.

With us Around €1,545.–, which is about 85 cents per day.

How much space does it really need?

With connections and room for changing the cartridge.

With us 12.3 cm wide, just under 40 cm installation height with room for changing the cartridge.

To help you buy the right thing, an overview.

Three ways to filter tap water. PiTec is the third.

What it isWhat it’s good for
Tap attachment What it is is screwed onto the aerator What it’s good for Quick to fit and compact. That’s precisely why it can’t hold much filter media. Designed to prevent limescale stains on the tap, not to remove pollutants from the water.
Filter jug What it is is on the worktop and is filled by hand What it’s good for An affordable way to get started, suitable for use anywhere, a little less convenient to handle. At MAUNAWAI, this is the Kini water filter jug.
Under-sink filters such as PiTec What it is a drinking water filter, once connected to the cold-water pipe; also known in the trade as an under-sink water filter What it’s good for After that, filtered water comes out of the usual tap. The filter is fully loaded, no refilling required, nothing on the worktop, nothing visible in the kitchen.

An under-sink filter that leaves the minerals in the water.

Anyone wishing to filter their tap water thoroughly soon finds themselves faced with a dilemma. The methods that reliably purify the water strip it of everything. The methods that leave the water untouched do not add anything back to it.

What comes outWhat is lost
Reverse osmosis What comes out almost everything, very thoroughly What is lost the minerals as well. Plus waste water, a tank under the sink and electricity
Pure activated carbon filter What comes out Chlorine, taste, some of the pollutants What is lost nothing, but he doesn’t give anything back to the water either
PiTec What comes out Microplastics, PFAS, heavy metals, pesticides, chlorine What is lost nothing that belongs in the water

Frequently asked questions about under-sink water filters

Do I need a new tap?

No. PiTec is connected to the cold water pipe, and your existing tap then delivers filtered water. No second tap, no hole in the worktop.

Can I connect the filter myself?

In Germany, work on drinking water installations is carried out by registered installation companies. For a specialist, the connection takes around 30 minutes. In Germany and Austria, our installation partner can come to you on request.

How often do I change the cartridge, and how much does it cost?

About once a year, for €269.–. Changing it takes around two minutes, and the key is included. There are no other costs: no electricity, no salt, no waste water, no maintenance contract.

Will I lose water pressure at the tap?

The PiTec 2in1 delivers 4 to 8 litres per minute, depending on water pressure. That is enough for drinking and cooking in everyday life.

What is the difference compared to reverse osmosis?

Reverse osmosis removes the minerals along with the contaminants and usually requires a tank, electricity and a waste water connection. With PiTec, the contaminants come out and the minerals stay in, without any waste water.

Does PiTec also filter the water for the dishwasher?

No. PiTec sits in the pipe leading to your kitchen tap. The dishwasher, boiler and shower are connected to other pipes.

What if I rent or move house?

Nothing is drilled. The connection at the angle valve can be removed, and the filter moves with you. If in doubt, ask your landlord. The Kini works with no pipework at all.

Why do you say spring water quality?

Because PiTec recreates the path by which spring water forms in nature: contaminants out, minerals in. It is still your tap water, only better.

Under-sink water filter or under-counter water filter: what is the difference?

None. These are two names for the same type of filter: a unit installed under the sink and connected to the cold water line. Some call it an under-sink filter, others an under-counter filter. Ours are called PiTec 2in1 and PiTec Professional.
