What sets us apart

No electricity, no chemicals, no wastewater, full of minerals

MAUNAWAI differs from conventional filter systems in four key ways: no electricity consumption, no chemical additives, no wastewater, and complete preservation of natural minerals.

Key points at a glance:
  • The system operates entirely without electricity, relying solely on gravity. It runs silently and is independent of power sockets, even during power cuts, in mountain huts or holiday homes.
  • No chemical additives: Purification is purely mechanical (ceramic membrane) and by adsorption (activated carbon, mineral ceramics). All materials are of natural origin.
  • Zero waste water: Every drop poured in comes out as filtered water. Osmosis systems, by contrast, produce three to five litres of waste water for every litre of drinking water.
  • Minerals are retained and rebalanced. The WHO expressly warns against the long-term consumption of demineralised water. MAUNAWAI filters selectively: pollutants are removed, whilst calcium, magnesium and potassium remain.
  • Independent IIREC analyses confirm: slightly alkaline pH value, 70% nitrate reduction, chlorine below the detection limit, 99.2% trihalomethane reduction and vital parameters indicating a quality similar to that of intracellular water.

Why MAUNAWAI is no ordinary water filter

There are hundreds of water filters on the market. Tabletop jugs with activated carbon, reverse osmosis systems, UV disinfection systems, ion exchangers, distillers. They all promise better water. And most of them keep that promise – at least to some extent.

But not all filtration is the same. The difference lies not only in what is removed, but also in what remains afterwards. And this is where it becomes clear why MAUNAWAI takes a different approach to most of its competitors.

No electricity

Most reverse osmosis systems require electricity to generate the necessary pressure. UV disinfection systems need electricity for the UV lamps. Distillers consume considerable amounts of energy to bring water to the boil.

MAUNAWAI operates entirely without electricity. In the PiPrime gravity system, the water flows through the filter layers solely by gravity. With the Kini, the water is simply poured in and seeps through the cartridge. This means: no running costs for energy, no reliance on power sockets, and no carbon footprint from operation. And remarkable silence – your MAUNAWAI filter operates silently.

In the event of a power cut, in a mountain hut, in a holiday home without a mains connection – your MAUNAWAI system works wherever there is tap water. And even without tap water: our outdoor filter bottles work on the same principle and can treat river and lake water.

No chemicals

Many conventional water treatment systems use chemicals: chlorine for disinfection, polyphosphates as corrosion protection, sodium hypochlorite against germs. These substances fulfil a function – but they leave traces in the water. Trihalomethanes, which are produced during chlorination, are considered potentially carcinogenic.

MAUNAWAI operates without any chemical additives. Purification takes place purely mechanically (via the ceramic membrane) and through adsorption (on the activated carbon and mineral ceramics). The water comes into contact only with natural materials: coconut shell activated carbon, mineral ceramics, noble shungite, tourmaline, coral sand and zeolite. All these materials occur naturally or are produced from natural raw materials.

This has a further advantage: no chemicals means no chemical residues in the water. Conventional disinfection processes inevitably produce by-products – such as the aforementioned trihalomethanes during chlorination. With MAUNAWAI, this cannot happen because no chemicals are used at all.

No salts and no ion exchangers

Traditional water softeners use ion exchangers that swap calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions. The water becomes softer – but the sodium content rises. This can be problematic for people who need to follow a low-sodium diet (for example, those with high blood pressure). Furthermore, ion exchangers must be regularly regenerated with salt – an ongoing maintenance requirement and a recurring cost.

MAUNAWAI reduces limescale naturally. The K8 cartridge uses a process based on observations of nature in mussels and corals: heterogeneous catalysis. Special ceramic granules trigger the formation of tiny seed crystals in hard water – just a few ten-thousandths of a millimetre in size. These crystals prevent limescale from depositing in pipes and appliances. The chemical composition of the water remains unchanged – the valuable minerals are preserved.

No waste water

Reverse osmosis systems produce between three and five litres of waste water for every litre of filtered water – so-called concentrate, which is enriched with the retained substances. For an average household, this adds up to thousands of litres of wasted water per year.

MAUNAWAI produces no waste water. Every drop that enters the filter comes out as filtered water. This is not only environmentally sound – it also saves money on the water bill.

Minerals are retained

This is perhaps the most important difference. Most high-performance filters – particularly reverse osmosis systems – remove not only pollutants but also all minerals. The result is technically pure water, but biologically speaking, it is ‘empty’. The World Health Organisation (WHO) expressly warns against the long-term consumption of demineralised water and recommends remineralisation.

MAUNAWAI filters selectively: pollutants are removed, whilst minerals and trace elements are retained and even rebalanced. The natural cation exchange in our ceramics optimises the ratio of calcium, magnesium and potassium. The water retains its natural character – including taste, mouthfeel and biological value.

What this means in everyday life

All these differences sound technical. But they have very practical implications for your daily life. A MAUNAWAI filter does not require a plumber. It does not need a nearby power socket. It requires no salt, no refill chemicals and no regular professional maintenance. You pour in water, and filtered, revitalised water comes out. Changing the cartridge every three months (for the Kini) or every eight to twelve months (for the PiPrime) is the only ‘maintenance’ required.

And: the water tastes good. It tastes fresher, softer and more vibrant than tap water. Many of our customers report that they drink more since switching to MAUNAWAI – simply because they like the taste better. That alone is a benefit to your health.

In summary: MAUNAWAI is not a compromise between different filter technologies. It is a unique approach that consistently follows one principle: nature has got it right. We just need to look closely and copy it – without electricity, without chemicals, without compromises.

What remains after filtration?

The independent analyses by Dr Medinger at the IIREC Institute show it in black and white: After filtration, MAUNAWAI water exhibits a slightly alkaline pH value, a 60–70% reduction in water hardness, a 70% reduction in nitrate, a reduction in chlorine to below the limit of quantification, and a 99.2% reduction in trihalomethanes. Heavy metals, pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are below the limit of quantification after filtration. At the same time, vital parameters increase: pronounced resonance signals at 22.5 Hz and 61.0 Hz, indicating a quality similar to that of cellular water.
