Our packaging

100% recycled natural cardboard – no plastic film.

All MAUNAWAI packaging is made from 100% recycled natural cardboard instead of plastic. We use Green Bags instead of polystyrene, plant-based printing inks and water-based adhesives, making every parcel fully recyclable.

Key facts at a glance:
  • Packaging made entirely from 100% recycled natural cardboard, no plastic
  • Green Bags instead of polystyrene and plastic air cushions
  • Plant-based printing inks and water-based adhesives
  • Boxes cut to size, no waste material
  • Everything is recyclable or reusable

No detail is too small to get right

When you order a MAUNAWAI product, sustainability doesn’t start with the filter. It begins the moment you open the package. Because what you hold in your hands has been carefully thought through: from the outer cardboard box to the very last piece of padding inside.

All our packaging is made from 100 per cent recycled natural cardboard. No new paper, no unnecessary coatings, no plastic film. The cardboard is sturdy enough to get your Kini, PiPrime or cartridges safely to their destination, whilst being light enough to keep the transport’s carbon footprint as low as possible.

Green Bags: Protection without regret

For delicate products such as the hand-blown glass container of the PiPrime, we need padding. But no polystyrene chips, no plastic air cushions that remain in the environment for centuries. Our solution is called Green Bags: reusable air cushions that offer the same protection as conventional materials, but do not end up in a landfill at the end of their life.

That may sound like a minor detail. But do the maths: thousands of parcels a year. Each one with cushioning material. If every single one is made from recyclable material instead of single-use plastic, that adds up to a significant amount of waste that isn’t created. Details like these make the difference between a company that talks about sustainability and one that lives it.

What’s on the packaging – and what isn’t

We deliberately avoid elaborate high-gloss packaging. No double boxes for that premium feel. No glossy inserts on coated paper. You get the information you need: clear, understandable, printed on recycled material. Everything else is waste, and waste doesn’t sit well with MAUNAWAI.

That doesn’t mean our packaging is carelessly designed. On the contrary: it is carefully designed, functional and aesthetically pleasing. But the guiding principle isn’t ‘How do we impress the customer?’ but ‘How do we protect the product with the least environmental impact?’

Printing inks and adhesives

Even when it comes to printing inks, we ensure they are plant-based wherever possible. The adhesives that hold our boxes together are water-based. No solvents, no harmful chemicals. When our cardboard ends up in the waste paper bin, it can be recycled without any problems, leaving no residues to disrupt the recycling process.

Why is this important? Because conventional printing inks often contain mineral oil components that can transfer into the new cardboard during recycling and from there into food packaging. A problem that is well known in the packaging industry but rarely discussed. At MAUNAWAI, we pay attention to these details because we believe that sustainability begins with the invisible decisions, not the visible ones.

Comparison with other industries

Looking beyond our own industry: In the cosmetics sector, triple-packaged products are the norm (plastic film around the cardboard box, cardboard box around the tube, tube around the product). In the electronics sector, polystyrene and plastic are supplemented by elaborate inner packaging made of moulded plastic. Food deliveries are piled high with ice packs, insulating film and disposable boxes. Compare that with a MAUNAWAI parcel: natural cardboard, Green Bag, product. Nothing more. It’s hard to do with less, and yet everything arrives in one piece.

The bigger picture

Packaging is a massive problem in many industries. According to estimates, packaging waste accounts for a significant proportion of total household waste in Germany. Much of it is superfluous: double outer packaging, unnecessary plastic film, oversized boxes. At MAUNAWAI, the packaging is as big as necessary and as small as possible. Not a single gram of material that serves no purpose.

This is our conviction: if we offer a product inspired by nature, then the way we package it must also live up to that inspiration. Nature has no mountains of packaging waste. And we want to help ensure there is less of it.

Packaging size: precisely fitted rather than oversized

Another aspect that is often overlooked: the size of the packaging. Many online retailers ship small products in large boxes because it is easier to use standard sizes. The result: air is transported. More cardboard than necessary is used. More space in the lorry is taken up.

At MAUNAWAI, the packaging is made to measure. The Kini jug comes in a box tailored precisely to its dimensions. The cartridges are packed in compact units. The PiPrime is packed in a box that protects its glass container, but not a centimetre more. This saves material, reduces transport weight and ensures that more parcels fit into a single delivery.

Tips for our customers

What can you do with MAUNAWAI packaging? The natural cardboard is ideal for craft projects or storage: children love building houses, castles or garages out of sturdy cardboard boxes. Or you can simply put it in the paper recycling, where it will be turned into new cardboard. You can reuse the Green Bags when sending parcels yourself. Or you can also recycle them. Nothing we send you needs to end up in the general waste. Every element of our packaging has a second life.
