Why 170 grams of coconut-based activated carbon provides the equivalent of an entire football pitch in filter surface area
The Kini is the easiest way to get started with living water. Here you can find out how it became the test winner in Altroconsumo, why MAUNAWAI deliberately leaves minerals in the water, and what lies behind the Pi technology in this compact jug.
- How the Kini outperformed 13 competitors in the independent Altroconsumo test and why the only drawback mentioned was the price
- Why 4 grams of activated carbon has the surface area of a football pitch and what 170 grams of it in a cartridge achieves
- The principle of selective filtration: how the Kini removes pollutants without stripping the water of its valuable minerals
- Why limescale isn’t a pollutant and how MAUNAWAI addresses the widespread misconception about limescale
- What laser welding, medical-grade plastic and a 15-year spare parts guarantee reveal about the philosophy behind the product
The perfect introduction to revitalised water
Would you like to drink good-quality water without worrying about complicated systems or high costs? The MAUNAWAI Kini water filter jug is designed precisely for this purpose. Thanks to its compact size, it fits into any home – on the kitchen worktop, in the bathroom or in the office. And yet it achieves something extraordinary: it transforms tap water into living water with spring water quality. This is not just a promise, but has been extensively tested and confirmed.
Test winner at Altroconsumo: there’s a good reason for that
We are proud that the Kini was voted test winner by Altroconsumo, a leading independent testing body. Out of 14 filter jugs tested, the Kini came out on top. Not because of spectacular promises, but because of genuine performance. The filter system reliably removes heavy metals, pollutants and unwanted substances, whilst preserving the valuable minerals in the water. That is exactly what a good filter jug should do: improve your water without destroying it. The Kini has been manufactured in Germany since 2015 with the care and quality that defines MAUNAWAI.
The technical details (which show why quality matters)
The Kini is compactly designed: 25.5 cm high, 24 cm wide. The upper container holds 0.8 litres, the lower 1.6 litres, making a total of 2.4 litres of fresh water ready to drink. The material is SMMA M30, a medical-grade plastic that is completely free from BPA and phenol. This means your water stays clean and pure, without plastics leaving their mark.
Each filter cartridge contains 170 grams of activated carbon from coconut shells. That may sound like just a number, but here’s the truth: just 4 grams of activated carbon has a surface area equivalent to a football pitch. 170 grams? That’s over 270,000 square metres of filter surface area. Imagine how many pollutants this gigantic surface area can absorb.
Added to this are 21 different mineral ceramics: including PI, tourmaline, EM, zeolite, precious shungite and others. These work together like an orchestra. Each plays its part in regenerating your water and enriching it with natural minerals. It is the same process that nature has been using for millions of years with genuine spring water, only condensed into a small jug.
Why MAUNAWAI does not demineralise water
An important issue that concerns many people: what happens to the minerals in the water? In reverse osmosis systems, the water is almost completely demineralised; even valuable substances such as calcium and magnesium are lost. With the Kini, it’s different. Pi technology filters selectively: pollutants are bound and removed, whilst minerals are retained. The principle is based on molecular size. Microminerals and trace elements with a small molecular size pass through the filter system largely unhindered, whilst larger contaminant molecules are detected and removed due to their greater binding and reactivity. In addition, certain ceramics in the cartridge release minerals into the water in a balanced combination. In this way, the Kini achieves optimal drinking water quality without depleting the water.
What about limescale?
This question often comes up: Does the Kini filter limescale? The answer is nuanced. MAUNAWAI focuses on the filtration of pollutants, not on the removal of limescale. This is because limescale is not a pollutant; it consists of calcium and magnesium, which are valuable minerals. The compounds within the limescale are broken down and restructured by the ceramics, whilst the minerals themselves are retained. If you have particularly hard water, the limescale filter pad supplied with the Kini can help. It reduces water hardness by 60 to 70 per cent, enough to improve the taste without demineralising the water.
How long does a cartridge actually last?
A filter cartridge lasts around 2 to 3 months. The limescale pad, which helps with hard water, also lasts around 2 to 3 months. The filtration process itself is quick: you need between one and five minutes per litre of water. The flow rate depends on the quality of the tap water; it’s quicker with softer water. If the cartridge starts to slow down, there’s a simple trick: soak it overnight in a bowl of water, give it a good shake and put it back in. This releases any air bubbles that might be slowing down the flow.
The economic side of things
The Kini is available from 90 euros. Running costs are around 90 euros a year, which covers four cartridges. Compare that with what many households spend: a crate of water a week costs around 5 euros. That’s 260 euros a year. With the Kini, you’re not just saving money, you’re also saving plastic, reducing transport distances and saving your own time. And when you consider the convenience – always fresh, revitalising water straight from the tap – the investment pays for itself in just a few months.
Let’s be honest: no fridge needed
Many people ask: Does the Kini need to go in the fridge? The answer is no. Living water is of the best quality at room temperature. This is down to how the mineral ceramics work; they prefer room temperature. If you like, you can of course chill the water, but it isn’t necessary and isn’t ideal.
Spare parts guarantee: 15 years
MAUNAWAI guarantees the availability of spare parts for 15 years. This is rare in this industry. It means: you’re not buying a short-lived product. You’re investing in something that will last you a very long time.
The cartridges are perfectly manufactured
The cartridges are laser-welded, not glued. This prevents adhesives from getting into your water. It’s a detail that others overlook. MAUNAWAI doesn’t.
Care and cleaning: simple and natural
The Kini is easy to maintain. To clean the containers, we recommend citric acid or diluted vinegar essence: one tablespoon of vinegar to 200 millilitres of water is sufficient. Important: after cleaning, do not rinse the jug with tap water, but with filtered or boiled water. Do not use abrasive cleaners or rough sponges, as these can leave scratches on the high-quality SMMA material. And should anything turn green, don’t worry – this is algae that can form
when unfiltered water enters the lower chamber. Check the cartridge for leaks and clean the affected areas with a vinegar solution. Do not place the jug in direct sunlight, as light and heat encourage algae growth.
The Kini is available in several colours. Each has the same filtering power, as the colour is purely aesthetic. It’s the performance that counts.
